Spotify has started rolling out lossless audio streaming for its Premium users, a feature listeners have been waiting on for years. The upgrade comes without any additional charges, making it part of the existing Premium plan.
What’s New
With this update, Spotify now streams music in 24-bit / 44.1 kHz FLAC, which delivers sound closer to what artists and producers hear in the studio. For most users, this means songs will sound richer, clearer, and more detailed, especially when using good headphones or speakers.
Where It’s Available
The rollout is already live in more than 50 countries, including the US, UK, Germany, Japan, and Australia. Spotify says it plans to complete the global rollout by October.
How to Turn It On
Premium users will get an in-app notification when lossless becomes available on their account. To enable it, head to:
Settings → Media Quality → Lossless.
When you play a track in this mode, a small “Lossless” label will appear in the Now Playing screen.
Works Across Devices
Lossless playback is supported on mobile, desktop, and tablet apps, as well as devices that work with Spotify Connect. That includes products from Sony, Bose, Samsung, and Sennheiser. Support for Sonos and Amazon speakers is also coming soon.
For the best experience, Spotify recommends using Wi-Fi or wired connections, since standard Bluetooth can’t fully handle lossless audio.
How It Compares
Apple Music, Amazon Music, and Tidal have offered high-resolution audio for years, some going up to 24-bit/192 kHz. Spotify’s maximum of 24-bit/44.1 kHz is closer to CD quality. Even so, it’s a big improvement over its earlier streaming options, and for many users, the difference will be noticeable.
