The University of Massachusetts Boston was placed on high alert Thursday afternoon after reports of possible gunfire on campus. The situation prompted a heavy police response, lockdown instructions, and widespread concern among students and staff.
How It Started
Around 3:40 p.m. on September 11, 2025, campus officials received calls about shots being fired near the East Residence Hall and the Campus Center. UMass Boston quickly posted emergency alerts on its website and social media, warning the community of a “public safety threat” and urging everyone to avoid the area.
Students living in residence halls were told to stay inside, lock their doors, and not open them for anyone except police officers. Many shared on social media that they were sheltering in place, uncertain about what was happening.
Police Response
Local, state, and university police rushed to the scene. Officers searched multiple buildings, including dorms and campus facilities, while helicopters were spotted overhead. The Massachusetts State Police confirmed that they had received an unconfirmed report of a shooting and deployed troopers to assist in the search.
Evening Update
By 5:11 p.m., UMass Boston officials announced an “all clear”, confirming there was no ongoing threat to students, faculty, or staff. Police found no evidence of gunfire, and no injuries were reported.
In a statement, the university said: “There is no ongoing threat to the community. Evening classes and activities are canceled out of an abundance of caution.”
Impact on Students
The incident left many students shaken, even though it turned out to be a false alarm. Videos and posts circulating online showed police vehicles surrounding the campus and students being escorted out of buildings.
Some students expressed relief that the situation ended safely, while others raised concerns about campus safety and communication during emergencies.
Investigation Continues
Law enforcement agencies are still investigating the source of the original report. Authorities have asked anyone with information to come forward and share details with UMass Boston Police.
Classes and regular activities are expected to resume on Friday.
