Patrick Bailey gave San Francisco Giants fans a night to remember with a walk off grand slam in the bottom of the 10th inning, sealing a 5-1 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday at Oracle Park. The victory pushed the Giants to 75-72 and moved them within half a game of a National League wild card spot, trailing the New York Mets who have now dropped seven straight.
The game looked tough for San Francisco as they went through 23 consecutive outs between the first and ninth innings. But Bailey’s late heroics turned it into one of the most dramatic wins of their season.
Justin Verlander was solid on the mound for the Giants, allowing just one run on four hits across seven innings. Reliever Joel Peguero earned the win with a scoreless 10th inning.
For the Dodgers, Yoshinobu Yamamoto was dominant, giving up just one run on one hit with 10 strikeouts in seven innings. He retired the last 20 batters he faced and has now recorded 10 strikeouts in three straight starts of seven or more innings.
Michael Conforto provided the only offense for Los Angeles with a seventh inning home run to tie the game at 1-1. The Dodgers had their chances but ran into costly outs, including a double play in the 10th when Ben Rortvedt was thrown out at third base.
Dodgers pitcher Tanner Scott gave up Bailey’s grand slam, marking the third walk off hit he has allowed in the past four road games. Blake Treinen took the loss, dropping to 1-4 on the season.
Los Angeles still leads the NL West at 82-65 but missed a chance to gain ground on the San Diego Padres, holding a 2.5 game edge in the division.
The game also saw Dodgers third baseman Max Muncy exit in the eighth inning after being hit on the left arm by a pitch. Muncy has battled injuries all season and was playing in just his 11th game since early July.
