Minneapolis, MN – September 23, 2025 — The family of 12-year-old Sophia Forchas is calling her recovery nothing short of miraculous after she survived a devastating gunshot wound to the head during the August 27 mass shooting at Annunciation Catholic Church and School in southwest Minneapolis.

The Tragic Shooting

The incident shocked the city and the nation when a gunman opened fire during an all-school Mass. The shooter fired through stained-glass windows as children and teachers gathered inside, killing two students and injuring 21 others.

Sophia was among the most critically hurt, suffering a gunshot wound to the left side of her head. The bullet is still lodged in her brain.

Emergency Surgery and Critical Condition

Doctors at Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC) rushed Sophia into surgery soon after the shooting. Surgeons performed a decompressive craniectomy — removing part of her skull to reduce swelling and protect her brain.

Initially placed in a medically induced coma, Sophia was listed in critical condition for several days.

Hopeful Signs of Recovery

In recent updates, doctors upgraded her condition from critical to serious, marking a significant step forward.

  • She has begun opening her eyes.
  • She shows awareness of her surroundings.
  • Doctors observed slight voluntary movement in her right leg.

While Sophia has not yet followed commands, her care team says these early responses are “rays of hope” for her long-term recovery.

Family and Community Support

Sophia’s mother, Amy Forchas, a pediatric critical care nurse at HCMC, has been by her daughter’s side while also helping other victims of the tragedy.

The family expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support:

“Your prayers are working. Sophia’s progress is a miracle,” they shared in a public statement.

A GoFundMe campaign created for her medical care and rehabilitation has already raised over $1 million, reflecting the outpouring of solidarity from across Minnesota and beyond.

The Road Ahead

Sophia’s journey is far from over. Doctors caution that the full impact of her brain injury remains uncertain. Risks of lasting challenges with speech, movement, and memory are still possible.

Later this week, Sophia is expected to be moved from intensive care into an inpatient rehabilitation program, where she will begin the long process of physical and cognitive therapy.

A Community Holding on to Faith

The Annunciation Catholic Church and School community continues to mourn the loss of the victims while rallying around Sophia and the other survivors. Vigils, prayer services, and fundraisers have united people in hope.

As Minneapolis grieves, Sophia’s fight for recovery has become a symbol of resilience. Her story continues to inspire faith and determination amid tragedy.
