Ladakh, India (September 25, 2025): Authorities in Ladakh have imposed a strict curfew following violent protests demanding statehood and constitutional safeguards under the Sixth Schedule. The unrest, which escalated in Leh and Kargil, has drawn nationwide attention as locals intensified their call for full statehood, jobs, land rights, and political representation.

What Triggered the Ladakh Protests?

The protests began after local groups and student unions accused the central government of ignoring their long-pending demands. Demonstrators insist that Ladakh, carved out as a Union Territory in 2019 after the abrogation of Article 370, needs stronger protection for its unique identity, culture, and resources.

Violence and Curfew in Ladakh

The situation spiraled out of control on Wednesday when peaceful marches in Leh turned violent. Security forces used tear gas and baton charges to disperse the crowds after stone-pelting incidents were reported. Following the clashes, the administration imposed curfew in Ladakh, suspended internet services, and deployed additional paramilitary forces in sensitive areas.

Demands of Ladakh Protesters

The protesters are demanding:

  • Full statehood for Ladakh
  • Inclusion under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution for tribal and cultural safeguards
  • Job reservations for Ladakhi youth
  • Environmental protection and land rights

Local leaders warned that if the government does not respond, the Ladakh agitation will intensify in the coming weeks.

Political Reactions

Opposition parties criticized the central government for mishandling the situation, accusing it of neglecting Ladakh’s democratic aspirations. Meanwhile, Union Home Ministry officials have appealed for calm and assured dialogue with Ladakh leaders and protest groups.

Impact on Daily Life

Shops, schools, and transport services remain shut in Leh and Kargil due to the curfew in Ladakh. Tourism, a major source of income for the region, has also taken a hit as travelers were advised to postpone trips.

What’s Next for Ladakh?

The crisis in Ladakh has reignited the debate on statehood, autonomy, and representation for border regions in India. While the government maintains that it is committed to Ladakh’s development, protesters insist that without constitutional safeguards, the region’s identity and resources remain at risk.
