The suspect accused of fatally shooting conservative activist Charlie Kirk has been identified as Tyler Robinson, a 22-year-old from Utah. Authorities confirmed his arrest on Friday after a two-day federal manhunt.
Utah Governor Spencer Cox announced the news during a press conference, joined by FBI Director Kash Patel. Cox said Robinson was tracked down after a family member alerted authorities. “We got him,” the governor told reporters.
Trump Reacts to Arrest
Before the official announcement, former President Donald Trump revealed on Fox & Friends that a suspect was already in custody. Trump said Robinson had been turned in by someone close to him and called for the death penalty. He described Kirk as a “brilliant” young leader who was “like a son” to him and credited him for helping energize young voters.
Who Was Charlie Kirk?
Charlie Kirk, 31, was the founder of Turning Point USA and a close ally of Trump. He played a major role in mobilizing young Republican voters and was a key figure in Trump’s return to the White House during the last election.
On Wednesday, Kirk was shot in the neck while speaking in front of a crowd of about 3,000 people at Utah Valley University. He was rushed to a hospital but did not survive. His death sparked tributes from political leaders across the United States and abroad.
How Investigators Caught Robinson
Governor Cox explained that Robinson’s family raised suspicions after he made comments implying involvement in the shooting. Investigators reviewed surveillance footage showing Robinson arriving on campus in a Dodge Challenger on the morning of the attack.
More than 200 people were interviewed during the manhunt, and authorities received over 11,000 tips from the public. Photos and videos released earlier showed a man dressed in jeans, Converse shoes, a black long-sleeved shirt with a US flag design, and a black cap.
Investigators later recovered a bolt-action rifle hidden in nearby woods, believed to be the weapon used. FBI agents confirmed the gun was a Mauser .30-06 rifle. Shell casings with strange engraved messages were also found at the scene.
Digital Messages and Motive
According to officials, Robinson’s roommate shared Discord messages in which Robinson discussed picking up a scoped rifle that had been left at a “drop point.” He also wrote about engraving shell casings with cryptic phrases.
Friends and family interviewed by investigators described Robinson as increasingly political and hostile toward Kirk in recent months.
What Happens Next
Governor Cox said he will push for the death penalty in this case, calling the killing a turning point in American politics. Trump echoed his support for the harshest punishment.
Kirk’s death has left conservatives across the country in shock and anger. Some have blamed the political left, arguing that years of hostility toward Trump and his movement created the environment for this attack.
As the investigation continues, Kirk’s supporters say his legacy will live on in the conservative movement he helped build.
