Copenhagen, Denmark – Denmark is facing an unprecedented wave of drone activity that has disrupted operations at several airports across the country, raising alarms over national security and European airspace safety.

Drone Sightings at Multiple Airports

Authorities confirmed that drones were spotted near Aalborg Airport, Copenhagen Airport, Skrydstrup Air Base, Esbjerg Airport, and Sønderborg Airport within days of each other.

  • Aalborg Airport – a dual civilian and military hub – was forced to suspend flights for nearly three hours after multiple drones entered restricted airspace.
  • Copenhagen Airport, the country’s busiest gateway, was shut down earlier in the week for almost four hours, causing widespread flight delays and diversions.
  • Skrydstrup Air Base, home to Denmark’s F-16 fighter jets and newly delivered F-35 aircraft, also reported drone sightings, intensifying fears that the incidents could be part of a hybrid warfare strategy targeting critical infrastructure.

Officials confirmed that the drones were not recreational models but appeared to be operated by a skilled actor using advanced technology, capable of avoiding detection and interception.

Possible Foreign Involvement

The series of drone disruptions comes at a time of heightened tensions between NATO and Russia. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen called the Copenhagen incident “the most serious attack on Danish infrastructure to date.”

European intelligence officials are investigating potential Russian involvement, especially after repeated airspace violations by Russian aircraft over Poland, Estonia, and Romania. While Russia denies any role, security experts warn these incursions fit the pattern of hybrid threats designed to undermine European stability.

NATO and Denmark Respond

In response, NATO launched Operation Eastern Sentry, strengthening air defense systems across Europe’s frontline states. Denmark is also fast-tracking investments in missile defense, radar detection, and drone countermeasures.

The Danish Armed Forces confirmed they attempted to neutralize the drones but were unsuccessful, highlighting vulnerabilities in current drone defense technology.

Impact on Flights and Travelers

  • Hundreds of passengers faced flight cancellations and delays at Copenhagen and Aalborg airports.
  • Some planes were rerouted to neighboring countries, creating ripple effects across European airports.
  • Authorities have urged civilians to report any drone sightings with video or photo evidence to aid investigations.

Why Drone Incidents in Denmark Matter

The Denmark drone incidents underscore how small, low-cost drones can threaten national security, civil aviation, and military installations. Experts stress that Europe must strengthen airspace security to protect against unmanned aerial threats that could escalate into larger conflicts.
