Meta Leaks Smart Glasses with Built-in Display Ahead of Connect

Meta accidentally revealed its next smart glasses, featuring a built-in display, just before its Meta Connect 2025 event. The leak comes from a video the company published (and then removed) that shows off Ray-Ban and Oakley models with more advanced features than earlier versions.

What the Leak Shows

  • A video (now deleted) from Meta’s own YouTube channel revealed smart glasses under the Ray-Ban brand with a display built into one lens.
  • There is also a model under Oakley with a wraparound design and a camera mounted on the bridge of the nose.
  • The glasses appear to be controlled partly via a wristband. This band uses EMG (electromyography) sensors to detect gestures like tapping or pinching.

Possible Features & Cost

  • These new models seem to go beyond earlier Ray-Ban smart glasses by adding a heads-up display (HUD) that overlays things like navigation, translations, and text in the user’s view.
  • The wristband gives a way to interact without touching the glasses’ frames directly. It may allow typing in midair or using gestures.
  • Price is expected to be higher. Reports suggest around US $800 for the version with the display.

What This Means

  • Meta is stepping forward in making augmented reality (AR) glasses more usable with real-world applications: maps, live translation, notifications in view.
  • The display built into the lens is a big shift from earlier smart glasses, which mostly recorded photos / videos or served as audio devices.
  • The leak may reduce the surprise factor at its upcoming event, but it also points to Meta’s confidence in its hardware roadmap.

What to Expect at Meta Connect

Meta Connect 2025 is scheduled for September 17–18. At the event, Meta will likely make the display-enabled glasses official, share specifications, pricing, availability, and show more models.

Why It Matters

  • As AR and AI devices become more mainstream, having a display in smart glasses could change how people interact with technology daily—less reliance on phones, more seamless overlays in vision.
  • Gesture control and display integration point to innovation in wearable tech.
  • Price is a barrier, but early adopters may push this tech forward.
