A video from Portage, Michigan, has gone viral after an incident at the Office Depot on South Westnedge Avenue Friday night.
The situation involved a request to print a poster of the late Republican activist Charlie Kirk for a vigil that had taken place earlier in the evening at Bronson Park in downtown Kalamazoo.
In the video, the customer asks the store to print the poster, but the employee on duty, who identified themselves as the manager, refused. The employee said the request was political in nature and could not be printed.
The video quickly spread online and caught the attention of several Michigan lawmakers. Republican Congressman Bill Huizenga criticized the store on social media, writing that it was shameful to deny the request for a memorial poster. Senate Minority Leader Aric Nesbitt also spoke out and shared a screenshot of Office Depot’s official response, confirming that the employee involved had been fired.
Office Depot later released a full statement addressing the matter. The company said the behavior of the associate was unacceptable, went against company policy, and did not reflect the values of Office Depot. The company also apologized to the customer and the community.
According to the statement, the customer was contacted directly, and the company offered to fulfill the order. Office Depot added that an internal review had been launched and confirmed that the employee was no longer with the company. The company also announced plans to reinforce training for all staff to ensure respect, integrity, and proper customer service moving forward.
