A deadly shooting took place outside a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Dallas on Tuesday morning, leaving one detainee dead and two others critically injured. Officials confirmed that the suspected gunman later took his own life.
How the Shooting Happened
The incident began around 6:40 a.m., when the attacker opened fire from a rooftop across the street from the ICE facility. According to investigators, the shooter targeted the facility’s secure entrance, known as the sally port, and fired at a transport van where detainees were being moved.
One detainee died at the scene, while two others were rushed to the hospital in critical condition. Authorities confirmed that no ICE personnel were injured in the attack.
Who Was the Suspect
The gunman has been identified as Joshua Jahn, 29 years old. He was later found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Investigators discovered unused bullets with the words “ANTI-ICE” written on them, raising concerns that the shooting may have been politically or ideologically motivated.
The FBI is leading the investigation and has classified the incident as an act of targeted violence.
Government Response
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said it is closely monitoring the situation and confirmed that additional security will be deployed at ICE facilities across the country. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem emphasized that protecting federal employees and detainees remains a top priority.
The Mexican government has also confirmed that one of the injured detainees is a Mexican national and has requested access to provide consular assistance.
Why It Matters
This shooting has sparked fresh debates about safety at immigration detention centers and growing threats against law enforcement. It also highlights concerns over political extremism and the security of detainees already in government custody.
Officials say the investigation is ongoing, with authorities working to uncover more about the shooter’s motives and whether he acted alone.
